Focusing of jet from synthetic jet array using non-linear phase delay

In the present investigation, a novel focusing technique is proposed and demonstrated to enhance strength of synthetic jet array (SJ array). Here, for same geometric operating parameters, SJ achieved by providing non-linear phase delay (∅) between actuators. An open-source software, OpenFOAM, used study influence Strouhal number (St=0.028, 0.086, 0.13) ∅ s (range: 0°−180°) on behavior fixed Reynolds Re=300. Irrespective ∅s, due strong suction effect, not operated at low St=0.028. However, maximum intermediate St=0.086 ∅=90°, which shows an increment ∼52% in time-averaged streamwise velocity (Vavg) measured y=20d compared ∅=0°. Similarly, Vavg enhanced ∼37% high St=0.13 with ∅=120°. Also, variation along centerline decrease slope decay profiles focusing. Most importantly, temporal evolution pumping power that no additional energy required enhancing array. The proper orthogonal decomposition analysis illustrates (St=0.086 ∅=90°) conserves ∼ 43% total kinetic energy, was lost destructive interaction vortices case Hence, effective implementation flow control, electronic cooling, other applications, it recommended focus St moderate (∅=60° 90°).
